WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 18, 2025 – On Friday, August 15, Bay Atlantic University (BAU) and the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on educational initiatives supporting community development, training, and future program growth. The signing took place during the official visit of SAMS President Dr. Aref Al-Rifai to Washington, D.C.
The MoU establishes a foundation for academic collaboration, capacity-building, and professional development, focused on supporting communities and expanding access to meaningful learning opportunities. It also lays the groundwork for BAU to explore new academic fields, cross-sector programs, and initiatives that address emerging real-world needs.
The agreement creates a framework for cooperation in medical and health sciences education, promotes institutional development, and supports humanitarian and educational efforts. Through the wider BAU Global network, this partnership sets the stage for potential future projects and program directions that can benefit both organizations. For BAU, the MoU provides important opportunities to strengthen its academic offerings, engage with community partners, and explore new mission-driven initiatives.
“This Memorandum of Understanding with SAMS reflects our ongoing mission to use education as a force for good,” said Dr. Sinem Vatanartiran, President of Bay Atlantic University. “It creates opportunities to launch meaningful initiatives and explore new academic pathways that serve both our students and the broader community.”
The signing at BAU was a key part of Dr. Al-Rifai’s official visit to the capital, which included strategic meetings at SAMS headquarters and with officials at the U.S. Department of State to advance grants and relief programs.
Reflecting on the broader impact of the agreement, Erin Hannan, Director of Outreach & Partnerships at BAU, added: “This partnership not only deepens our engagement with healthcare-focused organizations, but also opens up exciting possibilities for future programs, especially those that meet local and regional needs. It’s about building sustainable connections between education and real-world service.”
This MoU represents a strategic step in BAU’s ongoing efforts to cultivate partnerships that support communities, encourage academic innovation, and expand access to impactful education.
