WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bay Atlantic University (BAU) buzzed with unprecedented energy on February 26, 2026, as it played host to BAU Innovate, the university’s first-ever 12-hour inaugural hackathon. From 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, students from both degree and ESL programs traded their standard lectures for lines of code, wireframes, and business pitches.
The event was designed and organized by the Tech Connect student club to be radically inclusive, welcoming students of all majors and experience levels. Participants were challenged to collaborate and develop real-world technology solutions across a diverse array of tracks, including Education, Technology, Finance, Business, Healthcare, and Sustainability.
A Marathon of Creativity
The 12-hour sprint pushed students to their creative limits. Beyond the core competition, special recognition was up for grabs for “Best UI/UX,” “Best Application or Idea,” and “Best Campus Solution.” To sustain the students’ energy, the university provided breakfast, lunch, and refreshments, ensuring the innovators stayed fueled throughout the grueling session.
Dr. Zelalem Mengistu, Associate Professor of Cybersecurity at BAU and one of the event’s mentors, noted the impressive technical growth displayed by the participants.
“The brilliance of this event was watching students from such diverse backgrounds bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application in a mere twelve hours. This hackathon transcends simple coding; it fosters a vital mindset focused on securing and scaling the innovations of tomorrow,” said Dr. Mengistu.

Student Success and Collaboration
The collaborative spirit was the highlight of the day, as solo registrants formed teams on the fly, blending technical expertise with business logic and design thinking.
Siva Abishikth Mylavarapu, the president of Tech Connect, reflected on the intensity and reward of the event:
“The atmosphere in the Innovation Lab was electric. Having the space to build something from scratch alongside my peers gave us a real taste of the fast-paced tech industry. It was an exhausting but incredibly fulfilling experience.”

A Successful Debut
The university extends its sincere gratitude to the Tech Connect club, judges and mentors, the IT department, and the Student Services department for their essential roles in launching this new tradition. As the final pitches concluded and certificates were distributed to all participants, the success of BAU Innovate solidified its place as a cornerstone of the university’s commitment to hands-on, experiential learning.

The event concluded with a celebration of the standout teams that led the way in innovation and design. In the Main Track, Team Sabi was awarded first place, with Team QueueUp and Team BAU SmartPass taking second and third place, respectively. The competition also featured specialized Side Tracks, where Team Nupedia was recognized for Best Innovation, Team SafePath for Best UI/UX, and Team StudyMate_AI for Best Application or Idea. These winning projects perfectly captured the spirit of BAU Innovate, showcasing the immense talent and problem-solving capabilities of the talented student body.
With the inaugural event in the books, the BAU community is already looking forward to how these student-led solutions can be implemented on campus and beyond.
