Double Majors FAQ

Will a double major guarantee better career or doctoral opportunities?

Not necessarily. Employers and advanced academic programs value quality over quantity—focusing heavily on relevant skill sets, practical project work, and overall performance rather than simply the number of credentials on a transcript.

A double major can be very advantageous if it combines two complementary fields. However, if managing both majors prevents you from participating in hands-on projects, research, or networking, a single major paired with targeted coursework or practical experience may serve your goals better.

What will I gain from a double major?

Gain Depth Across Multiple Disciplines

A double major allows you to gain deep, structured knowledge in two different fields rather than just an introductory overview. It provides an opportunity to build a versatile, interdisciplinary skill set, such as pairing analytical and technical expertise with strategic business insight, which can help you stand out when problem-solving in complex industries.

Innovate at the Intersection of Fields

If you are interested in research, specialized roles, or emerging industries, pursuing two distinct areas of study allows you to connect ideas across disciplines and approach challenges from unique perspectives.

Personal Fulfillment

Beyond career alignment, a double major is a rewarding way to fully explore two distinct academic passions within a single, structured degree plan.

How many credit hours does a double major typically require?

The total credit requirement depends on your specific program combination and how many overlapping courses apply. While standard single-major programs require a set credit baseline, a double major typically requires additional coursework to satisfy all core requirements for both fields. Academic Advising can help you calculate your exact credit total based on your custom degree plan.

Will declaring a double major delay my graduation date?

It depends on your planning. With early planning, summer courses, and efficient course overlapping, many students complete a double major within their target timeframe. However, taking on a second set of core requirements may require an additional semester or higher term credit loads.

Can I drop my second major if I change my mind?

Yes. If you decide that pursuing a double major no longer aligns with your timeline or workload, you can petition to drop your second major at any time through Academic Advising. Any applicable coursework already completed can usually be reallocated toward general electives or a minor.

If I drop a second major, can I add it back later?

Yes, provided you still meet eligibility requirements. If you drop a second major and later decide you wish to complete it, you may re-apply by submitting a new petition through Academic Advising.

Keep in mind that re-declaring will require department approval, a updated program plan, and confirmation that you can still complete all remaining core and capstone requirements within your expected graduation timeline.
