ADOBE SERIES: PHOTOSHOP AND INDESIGN

Become an Adobe Certified Professional in 24 Weeks with our Photoshop and InDesign Certification. The course includes up to 24 Weeks of Paid Training ($17/hr) (upon eligibility) for 20 hours per week. Students who successfully graduate will leave the program with a nationally recognized credential (Adobe Certified Professional) as well as Adobe and Microsoft Office Software (paid for one year).

Course Description

This course introduces graphic and publication design principles applied to designing visual elements and digital publications using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. The teaching and learning method include hands-on experiences on various fundamental features of the two Adobe Applications that ensure self-sufficient on the essential tasks in working with the digital products (i.e., images, photos, videos, and publications). The course subjectively focuses on the content of the exams for Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop 2021 and Adobe Certified Professional in Print & Digital Media Publication Using Adobe InDesign 2021.

This training is currently funded and offered through the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES) for free for the eligible District of Columbia residents. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be between 18-24 years old with a High School diploma or GED
  • Must be low income DC Resident
  • Must be Out of School

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the graphic design principles and document design & production principles applied to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, respectively;
  • Apply basic tasks or routines in producing visual elements and digital media publications;
  • Utilize Adobe Photoshop tools to produce and modify visual elements, including images, photos, and videos for publications;
  • Utilize Adobe InDesign tools to produce and modify Print & Digital Media Publication on various formats, including Web, Print, and Mobile;
  • Provide technical assistance on using helpful features on Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign and how to use the software applications effectively;
  • Implement visual elements and digital media publication using the graphic design principles and document design & production principles, professionally;
  • Proceed to take the exams for Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop 2021 and Adobe Certified Professional in Print & Digital Media Publication Using Adobe InDesign 2021.

Weekly Schedule

Week # Topic
Week 1 Photoshop: Project and InterfaceThis module introduces students to create a new document and application workspace for Web, Print, and Video. The lessons will guide students through the use of pre-defined tools, including Non-printing design tools, Toolbar, Artboards, Rulers, Assets, Watches, Gradients, Styles, Brushes, and Patterns.
Week 2 Photoshop: Document OrganizationsThis module covers managing a document using Layers. The lessons regarding Layers will guide the students by integrating multiple layers into a final document. Many techniques to manage layer includes blending mode, clippings masks, and destructive and nondestructive editing such as painting, erasing, and resizing objects.
Week 3 Photoshop: Visual Elements (Part 1)This module covers the core tools for defining the properties of a visual element, including images and texts. The lessons demonstrate the use of applying Raster and Vector Image Tools. As for working on Photoshop text, the lessons will also focus on the readability and hierarchy of text to create proper visual orders.
Week 4 Photoshop: Visual Elements (Part 2)This module covers the continued lessons of Visual and Text elements. As for this second section, the lessons include multiple essential selection tools. In this section, students will also practice using the Transform tool to perform tasks such as resizing and resampling.
Week 5 Photoshop: Visual Elements (Part 3)This module is the last section of Visual and Text elements. Students will learn basic correction methods to improve a photo, including reconstructing, retouching, manipulating, liquifying visual elements. The lessons will also demonstrate techniques and practices to modify the appearance of objects, such as Adjustments, Desaturation, Filters, and Styles.
Week 6 Photoshop: Publishing DocumentThis module covers the process of publishing Photoshop documents. The topics include checking properties (e.g., color mode, color space, resolution, and dimensions) and importing the final piece. Students will also learn the aspects of saving a Photoshop file on a Local system versus a Cloud environment.
Week 7 InDesign: Project and InterfaceThis module introduces students to create a new document and application workspace for Web, Print, and Mobile. The lessons will guide students through the use of pre-defined tools, including non-printing tools, adobe assets, colors, swatches, gradients, and styles.
Week 8 InDesign: Document OrganizationsThis module covers the two important topics to manage a document, including layers and pages. The Layer lessons will guide the students by integrating multiple layers and controlling layer visibility and printability. As for the Paging topics, the lessons will teach the students to work on multiple pages, including creating, editing, and customizing pages.
Week 9 InDesign: Document Elements (Part 1)This module covers Visual and Text elements. As for this first section, the lessons include manipulating the content and its elements, including creating frames, inserting images, fitting the content, and manipulating text and typography.
Week 10 InDesign: Document Elements (Part 2)This module covers the continued lessons of Visual and Text elements. As for this second section, the lessons include the two essential tools (i.e., Selection and Direct Selection Tools). The students will utilize various features to manage the selection of components and apply effects and style to create interactive and dynamic content.
Week 11 InDesign: Publishing DocumentThis module covers the process of publishing InDesign documents. The topics include checking errors, formatting files, configuring screens, proving print copies, and packaging projects for distributions.
Week 12 Review & Practice TestsThis module is the last week of the course, covering the lessons’ summary focusing on the contents and questions of Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Certified Professional in Print & Digital Media Publication Using Adobe InDesign​. During this last week, students will work on practice tests and final preparation for the exams.
