To make things easier, we’ve answered the most common questions about the new F-1 visa rules<\/strong> in one place. Whether you’re a current student or planning to study in the U.S., this guide will help you better understand the new rules and what to expect moving forward.<\/p>\n

Before We Begin: What Is an F-1 Visa?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The F-1 visa<\/strong> is a nonimmigrant student visa that allows international students to study full-time at accredited schools, colleges, and universities in the United States.<\/p>\n

As an F-1 student, you’re expected to maintain full-time enrollment, make normal progress toward completing your degree, and follow the immigration rules that apply to your student status. Depending on your program and eligibility, you may also have opportunities to work through options like Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/strong>, Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/strong>, or authorized on-campus employment.<\/p>\n

The new F-1 visa rules don’t change the purpose of the F-1 visa but they change how your authorized stay in the United States is managed. The questions below explain exactly what that means and how the new rules may affect you.<\/p>\n

1. What are the new F-1 visa rules in 2026?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The biggest change is that the long-standing Duration of Status (D\/S)<\/strong> system is ending.<\/p>\n

Under the previous system, F-1 students entered the United States without a specific expiration date on their Form I-94. Instead, they could remain in the country as long as they maintained their F-1 status, stayed enrolled in school, and kept their SEVIS record active.<\/p>\n

Beginning September 15, 2026<\/strong>, that system will be replaced with a Fixed Admission Period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2. What does my Form I-94 expiration date mean?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Your Form I-94 (Arrival\/Departure Record)<\/strong> is the official document issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that shows how long you’re authorized to remain in the United States.<\/p>\n

Starting September 15, 2026<\/strong>, instead of seeing “D\/S”<\/strong> on your Form I-94, you’ll receive a specific “Admit Until Date.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

This date will be based on your Form I-20 program end date (up to a maximum of four years), plus an additional 30 days to prepare for departure.<\/p>\n

Important: Once your Form I-94 expiration date passes, you are immediately considered out of status and will start accumulating unlawful presence, even if you are still actively enrolled and attending classes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Unlawful presence can have serious immigration consequences, including automatic 3-year or 10-year re-entry bars<\/strong> if you overstay by 180 days or more.<\/p>\n

Because of this, it’s important to regularly monitor your digital Form I-94 record at cbp.gov\/I94<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. How do I apply for an Extension of Stay (EOS)?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

If you need more time to complete your academic program after your Form I-94 expires, your school can no longer process a standard program extension through SEVIS alone.<\/p>\n

Instead, you’ll need to file an Extension of Stay (EOS)<\/strong> application directly with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here’s what you’ll need:<\/p>\n
