They don\u2019t just want a paycheck; they want to see real <a href=\"https:\/\/bau.edu\/blog\/how-to-change-careers-tips-degrees-careers\/\">change<\/a> in someone\u2019s life, or in their communities or for the planet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"639\">That is where <strong data-start=\"417\" data-end=\"444\">social entrepreneurship<\/strong> comes in. Instead of choosing between \u201cmaking money\u201d and \u201cdoing good,\u201d social entrepreneurs try to design businesses that do both at the same time: they earn income <em data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"615\">and<\/em> solve a social problem.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"846\">This article looks at what social entrepreneurship actually is, what counts as a social enterprise (and what doesn\u2019t), where the idea comes from, and how social entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-social-entrepreneurship\" data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"961\"><strong>What Is Social Entrepreneurship?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"1081\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bau.edu\/blog\/tips-for-stem-and-business-students\/\">Social<\/a> entrepreneurship focuses on designing services, products, or <a href=\"https:\/\/bau.edu\/blog\/types-of-business-degrees\/\">business<\/a> models that address real social problems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1103\">A social enterprise:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1501\">\n<li data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1165\">\n<p data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1165\">Exists to create <strong data-start=\"1124\" data-end=\"1142\">social benefit<\/strong> as its primary goal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1249\">\n<p data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1249\">Generates <strong data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1209\">income and sometimes profit<\/strong> through selling products or services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1367\">\n<div class=\"docos-collapsible-replyview\">\n<div class=\"docos-replyview-static\">\n<div class=\"docos-replyview-body docos-anchoredreplyview-body docos-replyview-body-emoji-reactable docos-replyview-body-emoji-reactable-background\" dir=\"ltr\">Reinvests its profits to advance its mission instead of distributing dividends in the usual way.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1501\">\n<div class=\"docos-collapsible-replyview\">\n<div class=\"docos-replyview-static\">\n<div class=\"docos-replyview-body docos-anchoredreplyview-body docos-replyview-body-emoji-reactable\" dir=\"ltr\">It is built on ideas like long-term social impact, sustainability, solidarity, and social inclusion, rather than pure competition.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1805\">The people or groups behind these ventures are social entrepreneurs. Their main aim is to improve conditions for specific communities, tackle root causes of problems, or reduce stigma and exclusion. Organizations like <strong data-start=\"4104\" data-end=\"4141\">Ashoka: Innovators for the Public<\/strong>, founded by William Drayton, support individuals who design new ways to tackle issues such as inequality, access to services, or community development. This approach focuses primarily on social outcomes rather than income generation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4378\" data-end=\"4714\">\n<p data-start=\"4380\" data-end=\"4714\">The <strong data-start=\"4384\" data-end=\"4412\">social enterprise school<\/strong> focuses on how non-profits and mission-driven organizations can use <strong data-start=\"4481\" data-end=\"4498\">earned income<\/strong> to support their social goals. Figures like Edward Skloot highlighted how charities could create business ventures to diversify revenue and stay financially viable, instead of relying solely on grants and donations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4716\" data-end=\"5201\">Another influential example is <strong data-start=\"4747\" data-end=\"4765\">Muhammad Yunus<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4770\" data-end=\"4786\">Grameen Bank<\/strong> in Bangladesh. In the 1980s, Grameen began offering <strong data-start=\"4839\" data-end=\"4871\">microcredit and microfinance<\/strong> to low-income entrepreneurs who could not obtain <a href=\"https:\/\/bau.edu\/blog\/traditional-vs-online-classes\/\">traditional<\/a> loans. The bank\u2019s work showed that simple financial products, designed differently, could both support poor communities and remain sustainable.
